School fights bigotry amongst students on campus

School fights bigotry amongst students on campus - Northwest High, one of the oldest schools in Guilford County, is fighting back against bigotry on campus. Some of the students say their school is misunderstood.

Over the years, there have been several incidents involving racial slurs, that, for some, painted Northwest as a racist, elitist school.

“Our freshman year, there was a lot more … you’d hear the “N” word going around,” explained junior Jordan Abourjilie. “Or you might here more gay jokes.”

“There have been racial slurs made around our school,” said Jasmine Farrar, a senior. Often, students say these occurrences end in fights, and racial tensions. It’s something members of the Leadership Program are trying to change, one student at a time.

“I think some people just use the words they think it’s ok,” said Jasmine. “Like if you look at the media you see African-Americans use that word. They see that African-Americans use that word, they’re going to think it’s ok to use that word. So basically we just show them that there are people that are affected.”

Last month, the Leadership Program — a group spun out of the National Conference for Community and Justice — held Unity Day to tackle the issues of bigotry.

For 90 minutes, more than 600 ninth graders talked about intolerance and bigotry on Friday. “A lot of times students will open up in front of other students,” explained advisor Paul Egleston. “Or they’ll tell them things which they won’t tell their staff members or they won’t tell the principal.”

“We started to develop this idea that we can go ahead and talk with the students kind of see where they’re at racism, bigotry and then see if we can go ahead and make a change with that,” said Egleston.

Some say it’s working.

“I definitely have seen a lot more bonding within the classes and within each grade level,” said Abourjilie.

There are a little over 2,200 students at Northwest. Only 145 are black.

RAD is characterized by markedly disturbed and developmentally inappropriate ways of relating socially in most contexts. It can take the form of a persistent failure to initiate or respond to most social interactions in a developmentally appropriate way—known as the “inhibited” form—or can present itself as indiscriminate sociability, such as excessive familiarity with relative strangers—known as the “disinhibited form”. RAD arises from a failure to form normal attachments to primary caregivers in early childhood. Such a failure could result from severe early experiences of neglect, abuse, abrupt separation from caregivers between the ages of six months and three years, frequent change of caregivers, or a lack of caregiver responsiveness to a child’s communicative efforts. The criteria for a diagnosis of a reactive attachment disorder are very different from the criteria used in assessment or categorization of attachment styles such as insecure or disorganized attachment. Children with RAD are presumed to have grossly disturbed internal working models of relationships which may lead to interpersonal and behavioral difficulties in later life. There are few studies of long term effects, and there is a lack of clarity about the presentation of the disorder beyond the age of five years.
